Garrett survived the conservative resurgence in spite of having the resume of most of those on the moderate side, along with lots of connections and associations with moderate Baptists. His theology was conservative, but so was everyone else's at Southwestern, including some of those who voluntarily made an exit when they saw what was coming. He was, remarkably, able to remain who he always was and continued teaching the way he always did without damaging his reputation by paying homage to the resurgence's leadership or moving further to the right. I wasn't sure where he ended up, church-wise, but First Baptist Church of Nacogdoches is probably a predictable place. It's a Texas Baptist congregation that never hopped on the CBF bandwagon, but also never leaned in the direction of the SBTC.
