This new thread is to collect opinions, suggestions, etc., towards the creation of the perfect hymnal for each of us. I will focus on generalities and/or on my opinions and tastes. The rest of you can comment likewise on generalities or your own preferences, or you can critique mine.

One thing to be aware of with the Hymnary statistics is that it reports each instance as if it were in a separate hymnal. The two top scoring hymns in the above list undoubtedly look more prevalent than they are, because if a hymnal contains All Hail the Power set to both CORONATION and DIADEM and/or MILES LANE, or if Alas And Did is set to both MARTYRDOM/AVON/SACRED THRONE and AT THE CROSS, each of those is reported as if it were in a separate hymnal. Most hymns, of course, only occur once in a hymnal, but those two quite frequently occur twice.

I'm trying to think when was the last time I was in a Baptist church that used a hymnal. There are some variations on these hymns among the more contemporary songs that most churches now sing during worship but most of the worship music I've heard in church over the past decade has been written since 2000. Even the Friends church I attended before leaving Pennsylvania was much more into contemporary music, though the instruments they used were acoustic. Of course, in the actual worship service, there were no instruments, but they had music and Bible teaching during the hour prior to the actual service itself.

I think it would be informative to do some research and find out how many Baptist churches still use a hymnal. My guess would be that it is a larger number than perception might lead us to think.

At Fremont we have the option of using the hymnal. All the words (but none of the music) is projected on the wall, but eighty or ninety percent of the songs used are actually in the hymnal, and the numbers are provided. The hymnal came out in 1986, so very little of our song repertoire is post-2000.

When I say "hymnal" in contexts like this thread's title, I am not necessarily restricting myself to bound, printed books. I'm referring instead to accessible repertoires of congregational song. I am a fan of not having to hold a (perhaps fairly heavy) book in my hands while singing, but I am also a fan of having access to enough of the song (meaning music, in many cases, as well as words) so that my participation in congregational song can be fully active, and hymns can be something other than concert pieces for a praise band (or an organist). I am a fan, too, of a larger rather than smaller repertoire, and of the ability to add stuff. Modern electronics enable much of this, if there's someone around who knows how to manipulate the machines.
